Vicki Ward
Publisher, editor and lifelong champion of stories by writers of color.
From magazine writer to publisher
Vicki Ward has written poems, essays, and stories for most of her life, and began writing in earnest in her 40's. For several years she was a writer for Roots Magazine, where she interviewed the group Earth Wind & Fire, artists Freddie Jackson and Jonathan Butler, and others. She also wrote reviews for newly released CDs by R&B, gospel, and jazz artists, and reviewed local stage plays.
In 1999, as a member of a theater troupe, she traveled to Russia, performing in the chorus of the Greek tragedy Oedipus. She later published an article detailing her experiences as an African American woman observing life and culture in the former Soviet Union.
That love of story became a publishing house: Vicki is the editor of Life's Spices From Seasoned Sistahs, a collection of life stories from mature women of color, published by her company, Nubian Images Publishing. The anthology was named Best Anthology 2005 at the Los Angeles Black Book Expo and received a ForeWord Magazine Silver Award.
